What is the normal uric acid level?
Disease description:
During my physical examination, I found that my uric acid level was elevated. After adjusting my diet, I returned to the hospital for a follow-up test, but the level remained high. What is the normal range for uric acid?
The normal uric acid level varies by sex: for males, the typical reference range is 150–420 μmol/L, while for females it is 90–357 μmol/L. After menopause, women’s uric acid levels may approach those of males. Uric acid is a metabolic end-product of purine breakdown and is primarily excreted from the body via the kidneys in urine. It is one of the major non-protein nitrogen components in human plasma. Within the normal reference range, uric acid levels are considered physiologically normal and do not require treatment. However, reference ranges for normal uric acid levels may vary slightly among different hospitals and clinical laboratories due to differences in equipment, geographic location, and other factors. Therefore, whether a specific uric acid value falls within the normal range should be determined based on individual clinical context and in consultation with a physician.
