Asthma and cough can be treated with either controller medications or reliever medications. Controller medications must be taken daily over the long term to maintain asthma control, primarily through their anti-inflammatory effects. These include inhaled corticosteroids and systemic corticosteroids, which help reduce airway inflammation and thereby facilitate disease control. Reliever medications are used as needed, especially when taking controller medications long-term.
People with lung diseases often have a history of long-term smoking or occupational exposure to hazardous substances; however, some otherwise healthy individuals may also develop such conditions due to inadequate self-care. So, what are the treatment options for cough-variant asthma?
Treatment Options for Cough-Variant Asthma
Asthma and cough can be managed using either controller medications or reliever medications. Controller medications must be taken daily over the long term to maintain asthma control, primarily through their anti-inflammatory effects. These include inhaled corticosteroids and systemic corticosteroids, which help reduce airway inflammation and thereby improve disease control. Reliever medications are used as needed—particularly when symptoms flare up unexpectedly, such as after inadvertent exposure to allergens—to provide rapid relief from acute bronchospasm and cough. Examples include inhaled anticholinergic agents, which alleviate wheezing and prevent prolonged respiratory distress that could impair pulmonary function and, in severe cases, pose a life-threatening risk.
External environmental factors—including allergens, allergen exposure, and cold-air stimulation—can trigger asthma episodes. Children with asthma often possess an inherited atopic predisposition; if one or both parents have asthma, their children face a higher risk of developing the condition. Asthma is a common chronic respiratory disorder, and recurrent or uncontrolled episodes can lead to numerous complications. Its etiology is highly complex and frequently involves interactions between the human respiratory tract and infectious agents. Viruses, for instance, may invade the respiratory mucosa via the airways, compromising the body’s natural defense mechanisms and thereby increasing susceptibility to infection and subsequent asthma exacerbations.
