Can heatstroke cause headaches?
Headache is usually present after heatstroke, and environmental adjustments and oral medication should be promptly administered according to the patient's symptoms.
Headache following heatstroke is a relatively common phenomenon. It typically results from impaired heat dissipation caused by exposure to high temperatures. Excessive fluid loss during heatstroke may lead to nervous system dysfunction, causing headaches along with symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. Additionally, elevated body temperature disrupts metabolism and reduces blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain, which are major contributing factors to headaches in heatstroke.
For headache relief after heatstroke, it is important to immediately remove the patient from the hot environment and move them to a cool, well-ventilated area. Lowering the ambient temperature using fans or air conditioning can effectively alleviate headache symptoms. If necessary, medications such as Huoxiang Zhengqi Water or Shidi Shui may be taken orally under medical guidance to achieve effects of relieving exterior symptoms, resolving dampness, clearing heat, and dispelling summer-heat.
