Is kidney atrophy serious?
The severity of renal atrophy depends on the extent of the condition. Unilateral renal atrophy is generally less severe, whereas bilateral renal atrophy is considered more serious.
1. Less severe
In cases of unilateral renal atrophy, the other kidney often undergoes compensatory hypertrophy, maintaining overall kidney function within the normal range. Therefore, the condition is usually not severe.
2. More severe
Bilateral renal atrophy significantly impairs kidney metabolic function, potentially causing systemic symptoms and thus posing a greater health risk. It commonly develops following chronic kidney disease, tends to be persistent and progressive—especially in individuals with prolonged physical weakness—and may gradually worsen. In severe cases, it can lead to chronic renal failure and even progress to uremia, potentially requiring hemodialysis under medical supervision.
Patients with renal atrophy should seek timely medical evaluation and treatment targeting the underlying cause. For those with chronic conditions, it is essential to take prescribed medications regularly, complete the full course of treatment, and adhere to recommended dosages to control the disease and prevent further kidney damage.
