What foods should be avoided with gallstones and bile duct stones?
Patients with hepatobiliary stones should generally avoid spicy foods, high-cholesterol foods, and high-fat foods.
1. Spicy foods
Patients should usually avoid spicy foods such as chili peppers, ginger, and garlic, as these may increase the burden on the gastrointestinal tract and worsen pain symptoms.
2. High-cholesterol foods
Foods high in cholesterol, such as pork liver, pork kidneys, and egg yolks, should also be avoided. Otherwise, they may significantly increase cholesterol levels in the blood and bile, potentially increasing the number of hepatobiliary stones.
3. High-fat foods
High-fat foods, including fatty meats, lard, and cream, should not be consumed either. These may cause gallbladder contraction, elevate blood lipid levels, and possibly stimulate the liver, leading to stone impaction and worsening of discomfort symptoms.
In addition, foods high in oxalate should also be avoided, as they may promote further enlargement of liver and gallstones.
