Why does applying ice to reduce swelling cause pain?
Pain during ice application for swelling reduction is usually related to factors such as excessive cold, inflammation, or nerve damage, and requires targeted treatment.
1. Excessive Cold
During ice application, if the ice temperature is too low, applying it to swollen areas may cause the skin to become excessively cold, leading to blood vessel constriction and resulting in pain. Mild symptoms generally do not require treatment.
2. Inflammation
If the swollen area is infected by bacteria causing inflammation, levels of interleukins may increase, leading to pain during ice application. For more severe symptoms, medication may be used under a doctor's guidance, such as levofloxacin capsules or cefaclor tablets.
3. Nerve Damage
When swelling is severe, it may cause local nerve damage. Ice application can stimulate the damaged nerves, causing pain. Medications such as vitamin B1 tablets or mecobalamin tablets may be used according to medical advice.
Besides the above, pain during ice application for swelling might also be related to ligament injury. It is recommended to visit a hospital for evaluation and receive appropriate treatment based on symptoms.
