Can nails grow back if cut by a knife?
If a fingernail is cut by a knife, it usually can grow back.
When a fingernail is cut, it typically regenerates over time. Nails are composed of keratinized cells that continuously grow from the nail matrix beneath the nail bed and gradually push forward to form the nail plate. Even if the nail plate is severed, the nail bed continues producing new keratinized cells, which advance and form a new nail plate.
However, the rate of nail regrowth varies among individuals and generally takes several months for complete recovery. During this period, it's important to protect the injured nail and prevent further trauma or infection. Avoid prolonged soaking of nails in water and keep them dry, as this helps prevent infections. If symptoms such as redness, swelling, or pain develop around the nail area, topical antibiotic ointments—such as mupirocin ointment or fusidic acid sodium ointment—may be applied under medical guidance to help kill bacteria and reduce inflammation and discomfort.
If any abnormalities occur during nail regrowth, such as nail deformity or discoloration, prompt medical evaluation is recommended to receive proper diagnosis and treatment.
