Introduction
Waking up in the morning with discomfort in the epigastric area may be caused by poor sleeping posture, myocarditis, coronary atherosclerotic heart disease, or other reasons. Symptoms can be improved through general management and medication as directed by a physician. If a patient frequently sleeps on their side, it may compress the chest cavity, leading to discomfort in the epigastric region; this typically does not require specific treatment. It is recommended that patients sleep on their back.

Generally, feeling discomfort in the epigastric or precordial area upon waking each morning may be caused by poor sleeping posture, myocarditis, or coronary atherosclerotic heart disease. Symptoms can be improved through general management or medication as directed by a physician. Specific causes are analyzed as follows:

1. Poor Sleeping Posture

If a patient consistently sleeps on their side, it may compress the chest cavity, leading to discomfort in the epigastric region. This typically does not require special treatment. It is recommended that patients sleep on their back instead.

2. Myocarditis

Myocarditis is usually caused by drug irritation, viral, bacterial, or fungal infections. Upon waking in the morning, it may lead to some degree of cardiac enlargement, resulting in feelings of discomfort. Patients may take medications as prescribed by their doctor, such as Enalapril Maleate Tablets or Captopril Tablets, to alleviate symptoms.

3. Coronary Atherosclerotic Heart Disease

If a patient already has coronary artery atherosclerosis causing luminal narrowing or occlusion, blood flow tends to slow down in the morning, potentially leading to myocardial ischemia and hypoxia. This may result in symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, and shortness of breath. As directed by a physician, patients may take medications such as enteric-coated aspirin tablets or clopidogrel hydrogen sulfate tablets for treatment.

Besides the above-mentioned causes, similar symptoms might also be due to hypertension, myocardial infarction, or acute coronary syndrome. If a patient frequently experiences epigastric discomfort upon waking, it is advisable to seek timely medical evaluation for a thorough examination, accurate diagnosis, and appropriate treatment.
