Introduction
In general, eye redness, swelling, and excessive discharge may be related to factors such as lack of sleep, trichiasis, hordeolum, conjunctivitis, or keratitis. Patients are advised to undergo symptomatic treatment as directed by a physician. Additionally, these symptoms may also be associated with conditions such as trachoma or dacryocystitis. If patients experience discomfort, they should seek timely medical attention at a hospital to avoid delaying diagnosis and treatment.

Under normal circumstances, eye redness, swelling, and excessive discharge may be related to factors such as lack of sleep, trichiasis (inward-growing eyelashes), hordeolum (stye), conjunctivitis, or keratitis. Patients are advised to follow medical instructions for symptomatic treatment. Specific analyses are as follows:

1. Lack of Sleep

If a person habitually lacks sufficient sleep, the eye muscles may become fatigued, slowing local blood circulation and causing fluid leakage from blood vessels. This can lead to symptoms such as eye redness, swelling, and increased discharge. It is important to maintain adequate sleep and avoid prolonged late-night hours. Applying a warm compress with a hot water bag to the affected area may help promote local blood circulation and alleviate symptoms.

2. Trichiasis

This condition may be associated with entropion (inward turning of the eyelid), causing eyelashes to grow inward toward the eye. These lashes can irritate the eyeball, leading to symptoms such as eye redness, stabbing pain, and purulent discharge. Patients should seek medical evaluation and, under medical guidance, may require treatments such as physical epilation or cryotherapy.

3. Hordeolum (Stye)

Frequent rubbing of the eyes with hands may allow Staphylococcus aureus to invade the meibomian glands, triggering an acute suppurative inflammatory response. This results in localized tissue swelling and increased discharge. Treatment may include medications such as erythromycin eye ointment or levofloxacin hydrochloride eye drops, as directed by a physician.

4. Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is usually caused by infection or autoimmune conditions, and may also be related to external irritants. Viral or bacterial infections, as well as physical irritants such as dust or ultraviolet light, can easily trigger conjunctivitis, which commonly presents with red eyes and excessive discharge. Treatment may include medications such as tobramycin eye drops or acyclovir eye drops, used under a doctor’s supervision.

5. Keratitis

Keratitis occurs when the cornea's resistance decreases, allowing bacteria or viruses to invade the corneal tissue and cause an inflammatory response. In addition to redness, swelling, and increased discharge, symptoms may also include visible blood vessels in the eye and photophobia (light sensitivity). Treatment may involve medications such as levofloxacin eye drops or chloramphenicol eye drops, as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

In addition, these symptoms may also be associated with other conditions such as trachoma or dacryocystitis. If patients experience discomfort, it is recommended to seek timely medical attention at a hospital to avoid delays in diagnosis and treatment.
