There are symmetrical small holes under both armpits.
Small symmetrical depressions under both armpits may be caused by acne, folliculitis, bromhidrosis (body odor), sebaceous cysts, osteomyelitis, or other conditions. Appropriate treatment should be administered under medical guidance. Specific causes are as follows:
1. Acne: Irregular lifestyle, high-sugar and high-salt diet, bacterial infection, excessive sebum secretion, and other factors may damage the skin and lead to acne. Patients may develop papules, pustules, and comedones in multiple areas of the body, often accompanied by an unpleasant odor. Acne patients can use medications such as tretinoin cream or levofloxacin capsules under medical supervision.
2. Folliculitis: This condition is usually caused by staphylococcal infection. In adults, it commonly occurs in hairy areas, so it may appear under the arms. Folliculitis patients can be treated with neomycin sulfate ointment or mupirocin ointment as directed by a physician.
3. Bromhidrosis (Body Odor): Caused by apocrine or eccrine bromhidrosis, genetic factors, or other reasons, patients may experience discomfort in the armpits, small pits or openings, and strong body odor. These individuals should maintain good personal hygiene, eat a light diet, and avoid strenuous exercise. For severe cases, thoracoscopic surgery may be recommended under medical guidance.
4. Sebaceous Cyst: Obstruction of the sebaceous gland duct may lead to impaired secretion and cyst formation. These cysts are typically solitary or multiple and may emit an odor. Poor care may result in complications such as infection. In most cases, no treatment is required; however, maintaining hygiene and a healthy diet is important. If secondary infection occurs, endoscopic surgical removal of the cyst may be necessary under medical supervision.
5. Osteomyelitis: Most cases of osteomyelitis are hematogenous (blood-borne), but they may also result from trauma or postoperative infection. Symptoms include ulceration, pus discharge, dead bone fragments, or cavity formation. Treatment usually involves surgical procedures such as needle aspiration, window drainage surgery, or removal of dead bone, all performed under medical guidance.
In addition, patients should maintain a positive mood, seek timely medical evaluation when symptoms arise, and receive targeted treatment based on accurate diagnosis of the underlying cause.
