What to do if stung by a bee
After being stung by a bee, main treatment methods include removing the stinger, washing the wound, applying cold compresses for pain relief, applying medication, and monitoring for allergic reactions. Prompt action is necessary upon a sting to prevent worsening symptoms and potential danger. Specific measures are as follows:

1. Remove the stinger
After a bee sting, the stinger may remain in the skin and continue releasing venom. It should be promptly removed using tweezers or gently scraped out with a fingernail. Avoid squeezing the wound during removal, as this may force more venom into the body and increase absorption.
2. Wash the wound
Bee venom is acidic, so the wound can be rinsed with alkaline solutions such as soapy water or baking soda solution to neutralize the venom and reduce irritation. In contrast, wasp venom is alkaline, so acidic liquids like vinegar or lemon juice are recommended for rinsing.
3. Cold compress for pain relief
Local redness, swelling, and pain commonly occur after a sting. Applying an ice pack or cold towel can constrict blood vessels, limit the spread of venom, and help relieve pain and swelling. Apply the cold compress for 15–20 minutes at a time, repeating intermittently with breaks in between.
4. Apply medication
After cleaning, calamine lotion, essential balm (e.g., Fengyoujing), or antiallergic ointments can be applied to alleviate discomfort. If no medication is available, crushed fresh plants such as purslane or dandelion applied to the wound may also provide some relief.
5. Monitor for allergic reactions
Some individuals may be allergic to bee venom, so it's important to closely observe physical symptoms. If signs such as difficulty breathing, dizziness, or facial swelling occur, this indicates a severe allergic reaction, and immediate medical attention is required.
When engaging in outdoor activities, wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothing and avoid wearing bright jewelry or using strong perfumes to minimize attraction to bees. If you encounter a swarm, do not run or swat at the bees; instead, move away slowly. Keep a first-aid kit at home containing common treatments for stings to be prepared for emergencies.
