Symptoms and Manifestations of Pathological Jaundice
Jaundice: Common causes include hemolytic disease of the newborn, neonatal infection, biliary tract malformations, and neonatal hepatitis, among others. Specific clinical manifestations are as follows:
① Early onset
In pathological jaundice, symptoms appear relatively early—typically within 24 hours after birth.
② Rapid progression
After developing pathological jaundice, parents may notice that the infant’s skin and other tissues quickly become discolored due to elevated bilirubin levels.
③ Prolonged duration
In full-term infants with pathological jaundice, jaundice typically persists beyond two weeks. In preterm infants, it often lasts longer than three weeks.
④ High recurrence rate
A challenging feature of pathological jaundice is its tendency to recur. Even after symptoms have partially resolved, the condition may suddenly relapse—and often with increased severity compared to the initial episode.
