Symptoms and Manifestations of Pathological Jaundice
Jaundice: Common causes include hemolytic disease of the newborn, neonatal infection, biliary tract malformations, and neonatal hepatitis, among others. Specific clinical manifestations are as follows:
① Early onset
In pathological jaundice, symptoms appear relatively early—typically within 24 hours after birth.
② Rapid progression
After developing pathological jaundice, parents may observe that the infant’s skin and other tissues rapidly take on a yellowish discoloration.

③ Prolonged duration
In cases of pathological jaundice, jaundice typically persists beyond two weeks in healthy, full-term infants, and beyond three weeks in preterm infants.
④ Frequent recurrence
A challenging feature of pathological jaundice is its tendency to recur. Even after symptoms begin to subside, the condition may suddenly relapse—and often with increased severity compared to the initial episode.
