Can excessive exercise lead to rhabdomyolysis?
Disease description:
A friend who often runs with me developed rhabdomyolysis, which was said to be caused by excessive exercise. Can overexertion lead to rhabdomyolysis?
Excessive exercise may lead to rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis is commonly associated with factors such as overexertion, infections, or hypothyroidism. When rhabdomyolysis occurs, components from within the damaged skeletal muscle cells are released into the bloodstream. This causes the level of myoglobin in the blood to easily exceed the binding capacity of haptoglobin, preventing myoglobin from being properly excreted by the kidneys. Once the renal excretion capacity is overwhelmed, kidney damage can occur.
