Dr. Wang Shuai
A stye, medically known as hordeolum, is usually caused by blockage and infection of the meibomian glands at the edge of the eyelid. Bacteria, especially Staphylococcus aureus, can multiply at the gland openings and trigger an inflammatory response. The following factors may increase the risk of developing a stye: 1. Unsanitary hands: Frequently rubbing the eyes with unwashed hands can introduce bacteria into the meibomian glands. 2. Excessive skin oil production: Overactive sebaceous glands may lead to blockage of the glandular ducts. 3. Eye fatigue: Prolonged screen time or overuse of the eyes may affect meibomian gland function. 4. Weakened immunity: When the body's resistance is reduced, infection is more likely to occur. Note: If symptoms such as redness, swelling, pain, or pus formation occur, prompt medical attention is advised.
