Disease description:

I am 28 years old this year. Recently, I noticed several small lumps in my eyes. A friend mentioned it might be a stye and suggested applying some vitamin E to help relieve it. May I ask the doctor, what is a stye?

A hordeolum, also known as a stye, is an acute bacterial inflammation occurring in small glands at the edge of the eyelid (the meibomian glands or glands near the eyelash follicles). This inflammation is usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus and presents as a red, swollen, painful, and tender nodule, sometimes accompanied by pus accumulation. Initially, a hordeolum may appear as a small blister or pimple and may become increasingly swollen and painful over time. Common symptoms of a hordeolum include eyelid swelling, localized tenderness, a sensation of burning in the eye, blurred vision, and eye redness. It generally does not affect vision, but if left untreated, it may progress to a more serious infection, such as cellulitis. Note: If a hordeolum persists or symptoms worsen, prompt medical attention should be sought.
