How to treat heel pain
After walking around the mall all day, I developed heel pain when I got home. How should this be treated?

Heel pain is commonly caused by plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, fat pad atrophy, or injury. The following are some treatment options:
1. Rest and reduced activity: If heel pain results from excessive walking or exercise, reduce activity to allow the heel adequate rest.
2. Choose appropriate footwear: Wear wide, comfortable shoes with shock-absorbing features. Avoid high heels or hard-soled shoes to reduce impact and pressure on the heel.
3. Heat and cold therapy: During the early stages of pain, cold compresses can help reduce swelling and pain; during the chronic phase, heat therapy can promote blood circulation and relieve pain.
4. Medication: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can alleviate pain and inflammation.
5. Stretching and strengthening exercises: Regularly perform stretching and strengthening exercises for the plantar fascia and calf muscles to enhance foot muscle strength and improve foot biomechanics.
6. Orthotics and custom insoles: For heel pain caused by structural foot problems, orthotics or custom insoles can improve pressure distribution across the foot and reduce pain.
