What causes soreness and pain in the calf muscles?
Recently, my calves have often felt sore and painful, especially after walking a distance or standing for a long time. The discomfort becomes more noticeable, with a feeling of swelling and soreness in the calves, which is particularly distressing. So, why does this happen?
Possible causes of calf soreness:
1. Overexertion: Prolonged standing, walking, or engaging in strenuous exercise may lead to muscle fatigue in the legs, causing lactic acid buildup and resulting in soreness. In such cases, appropriate rest, soaking feet in warm water, or local massage can promote blood circulation and relieve the soreness.
2. Cold exposure to the calves: When the weather turns cold and proper warmth retention is neglected, or after getting caught in the rain, calf muscles may spasm from the cold, causing soreness or cramp-like pain. Applying heat packs or massaging the affected muscles, along with keeping warm by adding appropriate clothing, can help alleviate this type of soreness.
3. Muscle strain: Improper posture during exercise or engaging in strenuous activity may cause calf muscle strain, leading to soreness and limited mobility. Mild strains can be relieved through rest, cold compresses, and massage; severe strains may require medication or surgical treatment.
