Rh-negative blood (also known as "Panda blood") generally cannot be given to just any recipient. Panda blood is a relatively rare blood type in the population; its red blood cells lack the D antigen present in Rh-positive blood. Therefore, it cannot undergo cross-matching with Rh-positive blood nor can it receive transfusions of Rh-positive blood.

If a person with Rh-negative blood receives a transfusion of Rh-positive blood, it may lead to a hemolytic transfusion reaction, a serious complication of blood transfusion that can be life-threatening.

It is best to use blood of the same blood type as the recipient. Although in some emergency situations, to save a life, Rh-positive blood might be used temporarily, this is not standard practice and carries significant risks.

In addition, pregnant women with Rh-negative blood type need special attention to avoid Rh incompatibility between mother and baby caused by an Rh-positive fetus. When necessary, anti-D immunoglobulin should be administered as preventive treatment. To ensure the safety of blood transfusion and avoid transfusion reactions, strict blood typing and cross-matching tests must be conducted before transfusion to ensure compatibility between donor and recipient blood.
