Can individuals with high uric acid levels drink high-calcium, low-fat milk?
Disease description:
I have a habit of drinking one cup of high-calcium, low-fat milk daily. However, my recent physical examination revealed elevated uric acid levels. May I ask whether individuals with hyperuricemia can consume high-calcium, low-fat milk?
Elevated uric acid levels suggest hyperuricemia, which is often associated with frequent consumption of high-purine foods. Milk is a low-purine food and does not affect uric acid levels; therefore, it may be consumed safely. However, excessively high uric acid concentrations can lead to crystallization and deposition of urate crystals in the joints, triggering joint pain and gout. It is recommended that you visit the Department of Internal Medicine at a hospital for evaluation by a physician, who will review your uric acid test results and, if necessary, prescribe uric acid–lowering medications. Avoid alcohol and limit intake of high-purine foods.
