Thick toenails with wavy lines
The toenail is clinically referred to as the toe nail. In general, thick toenails with wavy lines may result from non-disease factors such as deficiency in trace elements, or from medical conditions including onychomycosis (fungal nail infection), lichen planus, and psoriatic nail disease. Depending on the underlying cause, treatment options such as general care, medication, or surgical intervention can be chosen to improve symptoms.
1. Non-disease factors
If a patient is a picky eater and avoids foods rich in trace elements—such as kelp, oysters, nori, pork liver—this may lead to a significant deficiency of trace elements in the body, resulting in thick toenails with wavy patterns. For mild cases, it is recommended to actively improve nutrition by maintaining a balanced diet, correcting habits of picky or selective eating, and consuming nutrient-rich foods like meat, eggs, milk, fruits, and vegetables. For severe cases, medications such as Polysaccharide-Iron Complex Capsules, Calcium Gluconate Zinc Oral Solution, or Vepanolic Calcium Tablets may be taken under medical guidance, along with increased intake of trace element-rich foods.
2. Disease factors
1) Onychomycosis
Caused by fungal infection, this condition leads to uneven thickness and wavy ridges in the toenails. Patients should maintain good personal hygiene, wash feet regularly, and use antifungal medications such as Sertaconazole Nitrate Cream, Terbinafine Hydrochloride Gel, or Bifonazole Cream as directed by a physician.
2) Lichen Planus
Chronic inflammatory reactions in the skin, hair follicles, nails, and mucous membranes may occur due to frequent insomnia, large emotional fluctuations, or endocrine disorders, leading to lichen planus and causing thickened toenails with wavy ridges. Under medical supervision, patients may apply topical treatments such as Prednisone Acetate Cream, Compound Dexamethasone Acetate Cream, or Mometasone Furoate Cream. Additionally, maintaining a positive mood, reducing stress, and engaging in regular physical activity are beneficial.
3) Psoriatic Nail Disease (Nail Psoriasis)
This occurs when psoriasis affects the nail matrix and nail bed, causing abnormal keratinization. Symptoms include pitted nail depressions, onycholysis (nail separation), nail thickening, and pinpoint subungual hemorrhages, which may also manifest as wavy ridges on the toenails. Treatment may involve applying Calcipotriol Ointment locally and covering the area with gauze. It is important to keep the toenails clean and dry and avoid pressure or trauma.
In addition, other conditions such as paronychia (nail fold infection), diabetes, or nail plate injury may also cause similar symptoms. If symptoms recur frequently, prompt medical consultation is advised, and treatment should be followed as prescribed. Regular monitoring of one's health is important, and individuals should seek appropriate medical care promptly when discomfort arises. Maintaining proper foot hygiene is also essential to prevent secondary infections.
