Introduction
The slight bitterness in grapefruit is usually due to the presence of bitter-tasting compounds such as naringin and neohesperidin in the pulp. Most citrus fruits contain naringin and neohesperidin, which are primarily found in the peels. In grapefruits, the peel is closely attached to the pulp, so the flesh often has a bitter taste. This bitterness may become more pronounced after frost damage or prolonged storage.

Most citrus fruits contain naringin and neohesperidin, which are primarily found in the peel. In grapefruit, the peel is closely connected to the flesh, so the pulp often has a bitter taste, which may become more pronounced after frost damage or prolonged storage.

Certain grapefruit varieties naturally have a bitter and slightly numbing sensation on the tongue, and you might inadvertently purchase such varieties when selecting fruit. Additionally, as a tropical fruit, grapefruit can suffer cold injury when exposed to low temperatures. This damage may allow naringin and neohesperidin from the peel to further penetrate into the pulp, resulting in a noticeable bitterness that affects both flavor and nutritional value.

Grapefruit, also known as pomelo, is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin P, B-complex vitamins, carotenoids, natural folic acid, and other vitamins. It also contains trace elements such as inositol and bioflavonoids, minerals including phosphorus, potassium, calcium, sodium, iron, copper, and selenium, as well as nutrients like protein, sugars, organic acids, and dietary fiber. It provides the body with abundant nutrients and essential vitamins.

Excessive consumption of grapefruit is not recommended. Grapefruit contains relatively high levels of sugar and organic acids; overconsumption may increase gastric acid concentration and lead to digestive discomfort. Moreover, excessive sugar intake can cause significant blood glucose fluctuations, which is detrimental to overall health.
