Introduction
If scab itching is caused by non-disease factors such as nerve regeneration, it can be relieved with epidermal growth factor gel; if it results from underlying inflammation beneath the scab, treatments such as erythromycin ointment may be used. Patients may also gently pat the area to alleviate localized itching and avoid excessive scratching, which could lead to infection at the wound site.

Itching of a scab can be relieved with epidermal growth factor gel if caused by non-disease factors such as nerve regeneration; if the itching is due to underlying inflammation beneath the scab, treatments such as erythromycin ointment should be used.

I. Non-disease Factors

Wound scabbing and itching are typically caused by local blood vessel engorgement and nerve regeneration. During dressing changes, iodine or alcohol can be generously applied. Epidermal growth factor gel may also be used. If itching is severe, topical anti-itch medications such as calamine lotion can be applied, or corticosteroids such as halometasone cream or dexamethasone cream may be prescribed.

II. Disease Factors

If the itching results from inflammatory irritation beneath the scab, the wound can be rinsed repeatedly with povidone-iodine hydrogen peroxide solution or normal saline to remove inflammatory tissue underneath the scab. If necessary, anti-inflammatory medications such as erythromycin ointment should be applied as directed by a physician to alleviate itching symptoms.

Gentle tapping on the itchy area or distraction techniques may also help relieve localized itching. Patients should avoid excessive scratching in daily life to prevent infection at the scab site. Maintain good local hygiene, follow a light diet, and avoid spicy or irritating foods such as chili peppers, Sichuan peppercorns, or black pepper, which may delay wound healing. Additionally, patients are encouraged to consume protein-rich foods such as eggs and milk, and engage in appropriate physical activity to enhance immunity and resistance to disease.
