Can you drink tea during your period, and what effects might it have?
Tea is generally not recommended during menstruation, as it may lead to anemia, sleep disturbances, and dysmenorrhea.
1. Anemia
Tea contains a high amount of tannic acid, which can interfere with iron absorption in the body. During menstruation, iron levels are already reduced due to blood loss. Drinking large amounts of strong tea may further increase the risk of developing anemia.
2. Sleep disturbances
Tea contains significant amounts of substances such as tea polyphenols, which can stimulate the central nervous system to some extent, causing excitement and potentially leading to difficulty sleeping or even insomnia.
3. Dysmenorrhea
There are many types of tea, among which green tea is considered to have a cooling nature. Consuming excessive green tea during menstruation may affect menstrual blood flow and cause symptoms such as abdominal pain and bloating.
In addition to the above effects, drinking tea during menstruation may also trigger gastrointestinal disorders or cardiovascular diseases. Women are advised to maintain a light diet during menstruation, drink plenty of plain water, and avoid strong tea.
