Can cold sores heal on their own?

Introduction
Cold sores may heal on their own if the condition is mild, such as when there are only a few blisters and no other significant discomfort. However, if the symptoms are severe—for example, large blisters accompanied by pain, limited mouth opening, swelling, or even secondary infection—it becomes more difficult for the body to heal independently, and spontaneous recovery may not occur easily.

Generally, mild cases of cold sores may resolve on their own, but severe cases may not heal spontaneously. The specific analysis is as follows:

1. May resolve

Cold sores are usually caused by infection with the herpes simplex virus and are typically self-limiting. If symptoms after infection are mild—such as few blisters and no significant accompanying discomfort—they generally resolve gradually through the body's natural healing process.

2. May not resolve

If symptoms are severe—for example, large blisters accompanied by pain, limited mouth opening, swelling, or even secondary infection—it may be difficult for the condition to heal completely on its own, making spontaneous recovery unlikely.

After developing cold sores, it is recommended to promptly visit the dermatology department at a hospital and receive proper medical treatment under a doctor’s guidance to prevent interference with daily life.
