Introduction
In general, HIV can be detected through methods such as serum HIV antibody testing, HIV nucleic acid testing, CD4+ lymphocyte count, viral load testing, and screening for co-infections. Patients are advised to follow medical guidance for appropriate treatment. Additionally, testing can also be performed using oral mucosal fluid tests or home self-testing kits.

Generally, AIDS can be diagnosed through methods such as serum HIV antibody testing, HIV nucleic acid testing, CD4+ lymphocyte count, viral load testing, and screening for co-infections. Patients are advised to follow medical advice and receive appropriate treatment. Specific details are as follows:

1. Serum HIV Antibody Testing

This is the most commonly used and reliable method for detecting HIV. By collecting a blood sample from a vein or a finger prick, this test checks whether HIV antibodies are present in the blood. If the antibody test result is negative, HIV infection can usually be ruled out.

2. HIV Nucleic Acid Testing

Nucleic acid testing directly detects the presence of HIV genetic material (nucleic acids) in the blood. This method can identify the virus within weeks after initial infection, earlier than antibody testing. It is suitable for early infection screening or regular monitoring of high-risk populations.

3. CD4+ Lymphocyte Count

HIV damages the immune system, leading to a decrease in CD4+ lymphocytes. Measuring the number of CD4+ cells in the blood helps assess the stage and progression of HIV disease.

4. Viral Load Testing

Also known as viral burden testing, this measures the amount of HIV in the blood—specifically, the level of viral replication. Viral load testing helps evaluate the activity of the virus and the severity of infection, guiding treatment decisions and monitoring therapeutic response.

5. Screening for Co-infections

Due to impaired immune function, people with HIV are more susceptible to other infections, such as tuberculosis and sexually transmitted infections. Therefore, a series of tests for co-infections may be necessary, along with screening and treatment for other related conditions.

In addition, HIV can also be tested through oral mucosal fluid testing or home self-testing kits. If patients experience any symptoms, they should seek timely medical care at a hospital to avoid delays in diagnosis and treatment.
