Generally, parts of clams such as the shell, liver, head, and gills should not be eaten. The shell is hard and calcified, making it indigestible by the human body. If consumed, it may irritate the mouth and esophagus, causing discomfort. Therefore, the shell should be removed before eating clams. It is recommended to choose fresh clams prior to consumption and avoid eating expired or spoiled ones.

Generally, certain parts of clams such as the shell, liver, head, and gills should not be eaten. The reasons are as follows:

1. Shell: The shell of a clam is hard and calcified, making it indigestible by the human body. If consumed, it may irritate the mouth and esophagus, causing discomfort. Therefore, the shell should be removed before eating clams.

2. Liver: The liver of a clam is typically black or green in color and contains high levels of bacteria, microorganisms, and potentially residual heavy metals and other harmful substances. Consuming this part may pose health risks. Thus, the liver should be removed prior to consumption.

3. Head: The head and internal organs of clams may contain sand, parasites, excrement, or other harmful substances. These areas are difficult to clean thoroughly and may harbor large amounts of bacteria and microorganisms. Therefore, the head should be removed before eating.

4. Gills: The gills of clams serve as respiratory organs, filtering oxygen and food particles from water. As such, they are prone to accumulating impurities and pollutants like heavy metals, making them unsuitable for consumption. Clam gills usually appear feathery or thread-like, are dark in color, and located on both sides of the clam's body.

Before consumption, it is recommended to choose fresh clams and avoid expired or spoiled ones to prevent potential harm to health.
