Introduction
Circumcision—the primary surgical treatment for phimosis—typically involves a circular excision and anastomosis of the foreskin. Postoperatively, edema usually resolves within one month; however, it is most pronounced during the first week (i.e., days 3–7). Some patients may even experience noticeable exudate during this period, mistakenly interpreting it as infectious suppuration—yet this is generally not a cause for concern.

After undergoing circumcision, patients commonly notice swelling (edema) in the surgical area—a completely normal postoperative phenomenon. This swelling typically occurs because a dressing is applied to the wound for approximately 3–4 days. The foreskin tissue is naturally loose and highly vascularized, making it especially prone to edema following surgery. In most cases, the swelling gradually resolves within about one month.

How long does post-circumcision edema last?

Circumcision is typically performed using a circular excision and suture technique. Swelling usually peaks during the first week—particularly between days 3 and 7—and may be quite pronounced. Some patients even observe noticeable exudate and mistakenly assume it indicates infection or abscess formation; however, this concern is generally unwarranted.

This exudate arises from interstitial fluid accumulation due to local tissue trauma—not from infection or inflammation—and consists primarily of normal serum proteins. Such edema typically begins subsiding after two weeks and fully resolves within approximately one month. Therefore, excessive worry is unnecessary. If a Shang Ring device was used, the ring must be removed by a urologist approximately one week postoperatively; it will not detach spontaneously, so timely removal must not be overlooked.

If swelling occurs after circumcision, dietary adjustments are recommended. Patients should consume light, non-irritating foods and avoid spicy, stimulating, or overly rich dishes, as these may increase the risk of infection.

During recovery, maintaining emotional calm is beneficial. Local warm compresses may help alleviate swelling. It is essential to keep the surgical site clean and dry at all times to support optimal healing. Sexual activity must be strictly avoided for at least one month following surgery; premature resumption may cause injury or delay recovery.
