Can a bicornuate uterus be surgically corrected?
Disease description:
When I underwent a premarital medical examination, I was diagnosed with a bicornuate uterus. My doctor said treatment is necessary. May I ask whether surgical intervention is possible for a bicornuate uterus?
Whether a bicornuate uterus can be treated surgically depends on the condition of the uterine cavity. Generally, if fertility is not affected, surgical intervention is unnecessary. However, if the anatomical abnormality is severe, corrective surgery may be required. Minimally invasive reconstructive surgery is typically performed 3–7 days after menstruation ends. Wound healing is relatively rapid, and sexual intercourse may usually resume about one month postoperatively. A bicornuate uterus is a type of uterine malformation primarily caused by incomplete fusion of the uterine fundus during embryonic development. It can be identified via ultrasound or hysteroscopy, revealing an irregular uterine shape compared with that of a normal uterus.
