I. Non-disease Factors

1. Overexertion

If a person engages in heavy physical labor during the day, excessive fatigue may lead to muscle spasms in the back, resulting in back pain upon waking. It is recommended to ensure adequate rest and relieve symptoms through appropriate massage and heat application to promote blood circulation.

2. Improper Sleeping Posture

An incorrect sleeping posture at night, especially maintaining one position for prolonged periods with excessive bending of the back, can place excessive pressure on the back, leading to back pain upon waking. Maintaining proper sleeping posture usually allows symptoms to resolve spontaneously.

II. Disease Factors

1. Lumbar Disc Herniation

Prolonged incorrect sleeping posture may cause protrusion of the lumbar intervertebral discs. The herniated disc can compress surrounding nerves and tissues in the lower back, causing back pain upon waking, often accompanied by lower back pain. Patients are advised to sleep on a firm mattress and wear a lumbar support belt to improve symptoms. In severe cases, minimally invasive surgery using a disc endoscope may be required under medical guidance.

2. Cervical Spondylosis

Prolonged poor sitting posture can lead to protrusion of cervical intervertebral discs. The herniated disc may compress surrounding tissues, and improper sleeping posture can worsen symptoms, causing back pain upon waking along with radiating neck pain. It is recommended to follow medical advice for symptom relief through neck massage, heat therapy, and improved blood circulation in the neck area. Additionally, medications such as ibuprofen sustained-release capsules or diclofenac sodium sustained-release tablets may be used as directed by a physician.

Furthermore, waking up with back pain may also be due to underlying conditions such as rheumatism or general physical weakness.
