Introduction
Dirt often accumulates along the edge of the big toe nail, which may be caused by non-medical factors such as poor foot hygiene or overly long nails, or it could result from medical conditions like nail infections, requiring appropriate treatment. If feet are not regularly washed or if tight, non-breathable footwear is worn, sweat and bacteria can build up, leading to dirt accumulation around the nail edges.

Dirt frequently accumulating along the edge of the big toe nail may be caused by non-medical factors such as poor foot hygiene or overly long nails. It could also result from medical conditions, such as nail infections, which require appropriate treatment.

1. Non-Medical Factors

1. Poor Foot Hygiene

If feet are not washed regularly or if non-breathable shoes are worn, sweat and bacteria can build up, leading to dirt accumulation along the nail edges. It is recommended to wash feet daily with warm water and soap, paying special attention to the areas around the nails, to effectively prevent dirt buildup.

2. Overly Long Nails

If the big toenail is too long, it may rub against shoes during walking, causing damage to the nail edge and subsequent accumulation of dirt. Regular trimming of the big toenail is necessary to maintain an appropriate length and prevent injury to the nail edge.

2. Medical Factors

If the big toenail becomes infected with fungi or bacteria, it may become thickened or deformed, and dirt may accumulate as well. It is advisable to wear breathable footwear in daily life and avoid keeping the feet in moist conditions for prolonged periods. When necessary, antifungal medications such as itraconazole capsules or terbinafine hydrochloride tablets may be used under a doctor's guidance.

In addition, paronychia (nail fold infection) could also be a possible cause. If symptoms persist despite the above measures, it is recommended to seek medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause and receive proper treatment.
