Introduction
If only a colposcopy is performed and minor damage to the vaginal mucosa occurs during the procedure, intercourse should generally be avoided until the mucosa heals, which may take about one week. However, if small tissue samples from the cervix or vaginal wall are taken for biopsy during the examination, local trauma is usually caused, requiring a longer recovery period—approximately three weeks. Therefore, intercourse is typically recommended to resume no sooner than three weeks after the procedure.

After a colposcopy, the appropriate time to resume sexual intercourse generally depends on the purpose of the examination and may be either one week or three weeks later.

1. One week later

If only a routine colposcopy was performed and minor vaginal mucosal damage occurred during the procedure, it is usually recommended to wait until the mucosa has fully healed before resuming intercourse, which may take about one week.

2. Three weeks later

If cervical or vaginal tissue samples were taken for biopsy during the colposcopy, local trauma is likely, requiring a longer recovery period—typically around three weeks. Therefore, sexual intercourse should generally be resumed no earlier than three weeks after the procedure.

After a colposcopy, it is important to avoid sexual intercourse in the short term to prevent irritation of the area, which could lead to symptoms such as abdominal pain or bleeding, or even trigger infection.
