How is a colposcopy performed?
Vaginoscopy is a procedure that typically uses a colposcope—a specialized instrument with magnification capabilities—to examine the cervix, vagina, and other areas in women. The specific steps are as follows:
1. Position the patient in the lithotomy position and disinfect the perineal area.
2. Insert a vaginal speculum into the vagina to open it and expose the cervix, vulva, and vaginal walls.
3. Clean cervical secretions with normal saline solution and observe the morphology of the cervix.
4. Position the colposcope 15–20 cm from the vaginal opening, turn on the light source, adjust the focus, and begin the examination.
5. After completing the examination, remove the colposcope and withdraw the speculum.
One week prior to the colposcopy, patients should avoid douching, vaginal medications, and sexual intercourse. It is recommended to schedule the examination 3–7 days after menstruation ends. For accurate results, individuals considering a colposcopy should visit a reputable medical facility.
