Introduction
Women can also experience hair loss. Under normal circumstances, a person sheds up to 100 hairs per day; consistently exceeding this number over an extended period may indicate pathological hair loss. Female hair loss is closely associated with hormonal secretion within the body. It tends to accelerate during pregnancy and menopause, and often follows a cyclical pattern, being significantly influenced by hormonal fluctuations as well as external factors.

In the past, we often heard about hair loss in men, but rarely about hair loss in women. Today, however, the number of women experiencing hair loss is steadily increasing—prompting growing concern among women. Therefore, it is essential to take preventive measures against hair loss in daily life. So, do women experience hair loss? Below, we address this question.

Do women experience hair loss?

Yes, women can experience hair loss. Under normal circumstances, an individual sheds up to approximately 100 hairs per day. Consistently shedding more than this amount may indicate pathological hair loss. “Female-pattern hair loss” does not refer broadly to all types of hair loss affecting women; rather, it specifically denotes a cluster of conditions primarily comprising androgenetic alopecia (female-pattern baldness), postpartum alopecia, and alopecia secondary to endocrine imbalance. Conditions such as female-pattern alopecia areata or trichotillomania in adolescent girls fall outside this classification. Female hair loss is closely linked to hormonal fluctuations within the body, typically progressing gradually. However, it may accelerate during pregnancy and menopause. Moreover, its course tends to be cyclical and highly influenced by both hormonal changes and external factors. Individuals experiencing noticeable hair loss are advised to seek timely medical evaluation and treatment—delaying care risks disease progression and may significantly impact quality of life.

Knowledge Extension: Causes of Hair Loss in Women

1. Stress-Induced Hair Loss

Modern life moves at a rapid pace, and many individuals face substantial psychological stress—potentially disrupting endocrine function and triggering hair loss.

2. Nutritional Deficiency–Related Hair Loss

Many women restrict caloric intake excessively to maintain their figure—or even skip meals altogether—resulting in inadequate nutrient supply to hair follicles. Over time, this nutritional deficit can lead to significant hair shedding.
