5. Health issues such as constipation and peritonitis can also cause the abdomen to appear larger. In cases of constipation, food remains in the intestines for a longer time, which may cause the abdomen to swell; peritonitis, often caused by bacterial infection or chemical irritation, can easily lead to increased abdominal fluid accumulation.
