What foods should be avoided during menstruation?
Women must observe numerous precautions during menstruation to prevent various health issues—especially regarding diet. So, what foods should be avoided during this time?
Foods to Avoid During Menstruation
Crabs should be avoided during menstruation, as they are considered “cold” in nature according to traditional Chinese medicine. Cold and raw foods must be strictly avoided throughout the menstrual period—particularly for women experiencing dysmenorrhea (painful periods). Instead, opt for light, mild-tasting, and nutrient-rich foods. Spicy, highly stimulating foods should also be avoided, as they may trigger early onset of menstruation or abnormally heavy flow. Similarly, avoid snails, which are strongly cooling and possess heat-clearing properties. Snails—and other cold-natured foods—should be strictly avoided during menstruation. Bamboo shoots, too, are very cooling and should be avoided by women during their periods. Watermelon is best avoided as well; while moderate consumption may be acceptable in hot weather, excessive intake is discouraged. Due to its cooling nature, watermelon can exacerbate dysmenorrhea and other menstrual irregularities, and thus should be strictly avoided during menstruation.

Women’s bodies are inherently more “yin” (cool) in constitution, making them especially susceptible to cold during menstruation. Exposure to cold—whether through food, drink, or environment—can disrupt internal balance and often lead to abdominal pain and dysmenorrhea. As most women know, painful periods can be extremely distressing. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid cold water—not only for drinking but also for washing dishes, laundry, or even facial cleansing. Regardless of season—be it freezing winter or scorching summer—women should refrain from using cold water to wash their face during menstruation.
