Can you eat seafood during your menstrual period?
Generally, it is acceptable to consume seafood in moderation during menstruation, but it should not be eaten in excess.
Seafood usually contains abundant elements such as zinc and iodine. Eating moderate amounts during menstruation can help supplement nutrients. However, during the menstrual period, women lose a certain amount of blood and their physical condition tends to be relatively weak. Seafood is considered a cold-natured food, which may impair gastrointestinal digestion and absorption, potentially leading to symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea. Women with allergic constitutions are more prone to gastrointestinal allergies. Some women who normally tolerate seafood well might still experience gastrointestinal allergic reactions during menstruation due to lowered immunity and weakened physical condition. Women with poor constitution, especially those with allergic tendencies, cold uterus (gonghan), cold body type, or suffering from dysmenorrhea, should avoid eating seafood during menstruation if possible.
Dietary attention is important during menstruation: avoid spicy, stimulating, and greasy foods; instead, increase intake of protein-rich foods, and those high in iron and calcium, along with plenty of vegetables and fruits.
